Whether it’s stockings, tights or leggings – no winter wardrobe should be without these key items. Of course how you wear them will define your fashion finesse or render you an overnight fashion mess.
So what’s the difference between this legwear? Sheer nylon stockings cover the foot and can be worn up to the knee or waist. Go for stockings in classic black or natural skin tones. Stockings are thinner than tights or legging and are ideally worn with a knee length skirt or dress.
Tights, in comparison to stockings, are slightly thicker nylon, cotton or lycra threads. Similarly they cover the foot and extend to the waist. Opt for opaque colours and cheeky prints and pair with shorts, mini dresses and skirts.
Add a pair of ankle or high boots and you have a look that’s bang on trend and comfortable too.
Leggings are defined as footless and worn down to the ankle, like pants, or just below the knee. Stay away from leggings that sit on or above the knee, as these will make your legs appear shorter.
Leggings come in a variety of fabrics and textures so don’t be shy to experiment with fun colours and patterns. Leggings look best when paired with ballet pumps and an oversized jumper or tunic. Wearing leggings could make a flabby tum or bulge more apparent so be mindful to cover up with a longer top if need be.
We thought Ntombentle Sithole’s “tights and boots” pairing was ideal for a day at Sandton City. We spotted her wearing high-rise riding tights (R599), crop jacket (R899) and top (R400) all from Forever New and neatly accessorized with a pair of brown boots.
Zara hits Southern Africa
On Wednesday, 10th November 2011, South Africa was hit by a fashion tsunami. Twitter and Facebook have been inundated with updates from fashion-savvy South Africans about the much-anticipated Spanish store, Zara which has finally reached South African shores. And it could not have come at a better time, what with the festive season approaching.
South Africa is the 80th nation to stock the Zara collection and the store is located in the gorgeous Sandton City’s new extension.
The 2700m2 store stocks children’s, ladies’ and men’s collections; your biggest problem will be finding the time to look through all the exquisite fashions.
At the launch, attended by the Who’s Who of SA celebrity company spokesperson, Victor Herrero said men’s suits with raised shoulders are “in this season and shoes should be “classic and fashionable”; the colours to wear this season are navy and neon yellow, while double-breasted blazers and printed tees are perfect for summer. Shorts are an absolute must.
More must-haves: accessories, and lots of them. “Bags are an absolute accessory this season, and we have loads of them”, says Victor.
“I’m loving it!” said Chris Tsakala, one of our Facebook fans. While Lerato Rantao, another fan, said “It’s about time”, we have a Zara in South Africa.
The women’s wear collection is elegant and sophisticated and includes studio dresses, and body-fitting low-back pewter sequin minis for those classic nights out.
The children’s collection also hits the mark with ranges for 0-9 month-olds, 3-36-month-olds and for 2-14-year-olds.
With new products coming in every fortnight, to miss out on this shopping experience would be a crime and the collections in South Africa are on par with the stores in Brazil, Chile and Australia..

High drama
Dramatic bolds and neutral nudes are the latest in lip colour styling; think a glossy deep purple for high-shine glamour. Eye shadow in skin-tone matching shades of light pink, coral, beige, peach or mocha are best. Stay away from shimmery blue, purple and green. Dust your skin with a light bronzer and end off with a pink tinted blush on the cheeks for touch of radiance.
Also choose a wide variety of pink shades in matte, gloss or traditional wear while keeping your cheek colour to a minimum, skin dusted with a soft bronzer and charcoal eyes for an elegant evening look.
If it’s red lips you’re after, be sure to choose a shade and texture that best suits you. For that red carpet celebrity look, go for dramatic eyes and lightly rouged cheeks for a healthy looking glow.
